| Ragnarok is a turn-based roguelike with minimal graphics. In this game, the player starts out as a mere mortal, and can choose from several different classes including warrior, sage, conjurer, blacksmith and woodsmith. The game starts out in a small Viking village, in which the player learns of his quest, which is to aid the old Norse gods in their battle against the evil gods at Ragnarok. In Norse mythology, Ragnarok is the final battle between good and evil at the coming of the end of the world. Ragnarok features a primitive graphical interface with many menus and objects to be used in various ways. Each time a new game is created, a new map is created, so gameplay is virtually endless, as there are many different ways to play the game. Ragnarok allows players to save their character every 200 turns, and upon exit of the program. However, when a player's character is killed, the saved files are wiped clean and the game must be loaded again anew. The developers have released this game as freeware, which means it be downloaded free of charge and does not have to be purchased. However, the freeware release lacks sound effects or music. A European version has also be released under the name Valhalla, which does include sound effects as well as background music. |
